Meet our I AM Mentee’s, Birmingham’s Most Talented!!!
It is such a blessing to be called to be a Mentor. I have been able to be a part of an extended family. I have attached a photo of my mother and father Jess and Donzella Washington, who always modeled a giving and caring heart, thank you. We continue to volunteer and give back. For the month of Oct. the girls volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, and a special activity will take place for the Thanksgiving Holiday at Eastview Nursing Home.
Be blessed.

The Past Year
The past year has brought many blessings and challenges for the I AM Project, Mentoring Program. Through this growth the Lord has blessed the relationships between Mentee, Mentor and their families. We have continued volunteering opportunities at Nursing Homes, Shelters for Woman and children, Church events, the Ronald McDonald House and many others. Our college tours have also continued and our goal is to venture out to different states. These ladies have moved into their sophomore years in High School and it has been an amazing adventure to see their growth physically and mentally. My personal goal is to keep this blog updated with all the activities we do month-to-month…I admit a serious slip up for past year, but God is continuing to open my eyes as to what His Will is for the I AM Project. The I AM Project welcomes with widespread open arms, two new mentee’s!!!! Please continue to pray that we are effective in first advancing God’s Kingdom and equipping the our mentee’s with lifelong skills.
November 2010
So much can be discovered about ourselves when we perform in the act of Giving. This month the girls volunteered at Eastview Nursing home. We made bracelets and necklaces for the residents as well as provided hands massages. The girls came alive and although initially reserved, soon took great satisfaction in knowing they were making someones day and placing a smile on beautiful faces. Please continue to pray for these talented young ladies!
God Bless

End the of summer…beginning a new season.
The time has come for our “Talented Ten” to enter their freshmen year of high school. This summer we hosted several workshops geared toward increasing esteem, developing new attitudes and the importance of educational achievement. We would like to give a big THANK YOU! to all the guest speakers who provided our girls with vital information they can use toward their future success. We would also like to thank South Avondale Library for allowing us to use their conference room for our weekly ’Girl Talks’. Please continue to pray for our youth and all who work toward improving our communities. There is much, much more to come!

I AM Project…HBCU Tour..Oakwood University
On Friday morning, the I AM Project will continue with the HBCU Tour as we travel to Oakwood University located in Huntsville, AL. This historically black Seventh-day Adventist university provides Christian education to the students that attend. They emphasize the importance of developing your mind, body and spirit. The I AM girls will get a chance to tour this beautiful campus, speak with deans about academics and be exposed to a different type of university. Stay tuned for more…

Meeting of a milestone…8th Grade Graduation
It has been awhile since a recent post but so much has occurred over the last month. Storms postponed the car wash, we also had to postpone two college tours (which are now rescheduled for June) but we have NOT slowed in our efforts to provide a positive influence to our young ladies. Weekly meetings, community service projects and simply hanging-out are great ways we’ve continued to stay connected and provide encouragement. After a great school year, the first I AM Project group has graduated and will be entering into their freshman year of high school. We are excited that our ”Talented Ten” reached this milestone but now the work really begins. This summer we are planning activities to enhance self-esteem, help with the transition into high school and prepare for the next four years. If you would like to assist in any way please post a comment or provide ideas that may help us. Please stay posted…you will read some great things that our ladies are doing in Birmingham!
